The Power of Craigslist

Filed under Money & Finances, Random

If you’ve never used Craigslist before, you’re missing out. Craigslist is the classified section of the Internet.

And the best part…it’s free to buy and sell.

I’ve bought and sold several items on Craigslist and am always amazed at just how quick things sell. For example, I listed an old laptop this morning. By early afternoon, I had a call from a guy who wanted it. We met 45 minutes later, and I walked away with the full price in cash. Amazing.

So if you’re looking for a deal on something…anything…be sure to check it out.

And if you’re really bored or just looking for something amusing to do, check out the “Missed Connections” section of the site. It is sad, hilarious, and creepy all at the same time. Look it up and you’ll see what I mean…

More Pics of the Newest Addition…

We arrived home from the hospital yesterday but I wanted to share a few other pictures…

Even after giving birth, my wife looks really hot…

This is me just celebrating what I created…

The entire time we were at the hospital, all Sydnee wanted to do was see the helicopter. Yesterday, before leaving, I took her for a walk around the hospital, and we happened to run into one of the pilots who took us up on the roof to see the helicopter up close. Pretty cool!

Also On This Day…

As I was driving home from the hospital last night, I realized that our new little daughter, Emilee, will have two interesting facts about her birthday:

  • Same birthday as the new 3G iPhone (pretty cool)
  • Same date of a trashy convenience store chain, 7-11 (not so cool)

I guess it all balances out on the “cool” scale…

Hello World…I’m Emilee

Well, I’m happy to announce that I’m the proud owner of a 2008 baby girl. It’s the E.M.E.E. model from the 7-11 series. She’s fully loaded with 10 fingers, 10 toes, and lots of dark hair. She’s gorgeous and her owners (her mother and I) hope she will be a smooth ride for the next 18 years!

Here’s the proof of how productive I, how produce my wife was today…

Last Day With One…

Well today is quite possibly the last day we will have with just one child. As most of you may know, my wife is quite pregnant. So her doctor has scheduled to induce her tomorrow morning. Which means if all goes according to plan, tomorrow we should add another bambino to our growing litter.

I’ll try to keep you up to date via Twitter and will post some pictures in the next few days.

Let the sleepless nights begin…

Working Yourself to Death

Filed under Media, Thinking Out Loud...

I saw this article today on Yahoo about an engineer for Toyota who literally died of overwork.

Not to make light of the situation, but do you think all the overtime was worth it?

Just another reminder that there is more to life than working all the time…

Book Update #6

It’s been a little over a month since I’ve really said much about the book, so I wanted to pass along an update. The book is really coming along well and is right on track. I received back edits from several people and have been going through the book paragraph by paragraph, trying to reword, rewrite, and edit every little bit to make it as good as possible. We’re reordering several chapters, cutting some chapters, merging others, and adding some new ones.

It’s a long, tedious process but in the end, it will be worth it. Right now, I’m close to half way through the editing process and am hoping to be done by next week.

I think we have settled on the cover design which is pretty exciting. Here it is as we have it right now…

Let me know what you think on the cover…

We’re still on track to have the book printed and in hand by probably late September, so I’m pretty jazzed about that!

I’ve also put together five sample chapters that we will make available for download sometime next week.

What I’ve Been Reading Lately…

Filed under Books, Thinking Out Loud...

I’ve been meaning to make a post on this and just keep forgetting. I was on the road quite a bit in June and here are a few books I read:

  • The Shack – William P. Young. A very interesting Christian fictional book to get you thinking. Not sure I agree with everything but definitely opened my eyes to some things.
  • Meatball Sundae – Seth Godin. Finished this a few weeks ago on the plane and loved it. Seth Godin is a phenomenal marketing mind and really causes me to think about how I approach my business.
  • Founders at Work – Jessica Livingston. Interesting book where the author interviewed about 35+ entrepreneurs about how they started their company. Primarily successful internet startups such as HotMail, Bloglines, Apple, and Craigslist. A little too computer-technical for me at points but I always enjoy hearing how businesses started.
  • Self-Publishing Manual – Dan Poytner. I’ve heard this from others but if you’re going to self-publish a book, this is the resource to read. Great, practical steps and ideas for writing, printing, and marketing your book.

One thing I continually say is that 100 years ago in factory days, people were paid based on how many widgets they could produce on an assembly line. In today’s economy, you are paid based less on what you can do and more on what you know.

It is a knowledge based economy. The more you know, the more valuable you are.

If that’s the case, then what are you doing to learn something new and make yourself more valuable?

Celebrating Freedom…

Today is more than just about grilling out, hanging with friends and family, and blowing stuff up. It is even more than hot dog eating contests.

It is a day to celebrate freedom. I’m thankful that I have the freedom to…

…live where I please.

…do work that I love.

…pursue countless opportunities.

…dream big dreams.

…believe what I want.

…spend my money how I choose.

There are numerous people around the world that can’t celebrate any of these freedoms today, or any day for that matter.

I would encourage you to take the time today to celebrate freedom!

Last Night in “Big Church”

Last night I had the opportunity to speak at my church in what is commonly referred to as “big church.” I’ve spoken several times for the students there but this was a first with the adults. It all went well and I had a good time.

Anytime I’m speaking to adults instead of students, I have to change my lingo. Talking about things like YouTube, Facebook, and OMG don’t always make sense to the older crowd!
