And That’s Why You Have An Emergency Fund

Filed under Money & Finances, Personal

Last week I had the “check engine” light come on in my car.

Awesome.

I love it when lights on my dashboard come on.  Not really.  It’s never something positive like “you just won the lottery” or “hey Grant, you look nice today.”

A light on the dashboard typically means, “Hey buddy, hope you didn’t have plans for the weekend, because I’m about ready to cost you some cash!”

So I took it in to be worked on.  First, it was just a sensor that needed to be replaced.  Then, some tune-up work came into the picture.  And next thing you know, I was swiping my debit card for $372 (because you don’t need a credit card for emergencies).

Awesome.

But here’s my point.  A few years ago, this would have been a major stress, because I wouldn’t have had $377 for such a situation.  But thankfully we have an emergency fund for times such as this.

So while I can probably think of 372 different things I’d rather do with $372 than pay a mechanic, it didn’t cause a panic attack.

Instead of it being a huge crisis and cause for stress, now it’s just an inconvenience.  A very minor bump in the road (which my car will be better suited for now with it’s awesome new sensor and tune-up).

And that’s why you have an emergency fund…for when lights appear on your dashboard.

Follow The Leader…Who’s The Leader Though?

Last night, I attended our fourth homeowners association meeting for our neighborhood.  Unfortunately, there’s a new developer that has recently purchased the neighborhood and apparently is being a thorn in the flesh to deal with.

There were about 35-40 people at the meeting from about 25 different households.  One of the primary objectives of the meeting was electing a board for the HOA.

We stumbled through accomplishing that task, but then something interesting happened.

In the previous meetings and even after the vote, there was still no leader.  Sure, we “elected” a President but that person didn’t say more than two words the rest of the meeting.  Weird.

It was like watching the first episode in a season of Survivor.  Clearly, there needs to be a leader and there are people emerging to be leaders, but no one wants to step up and actually do it.

Don’t get me wrong…I’m not knocking any of the people involved or pointing fingers in any way, because I certainly didn’t step up (nor had any interest) to become one of the HOA leaders.

It was the same thing I see when I work with students.  If you put students in a group with their peers, it’s interesting to see who emerges as the leader.

My point is this: We need good leaders.  People want to have someone they can follow.  In that room last night, everyone wanted someone to take charge, get to the point, cut off all the non-sense debates and side conversations, lead decision-making, and get things going in the right direction.

Here’s my challenge for you…are you in a situation or setting or involved with a group of people and you know you need to step up to be the leader?  What’s holding you back?  Go with your gut if you feel you should step up to take charge.  People don’t want to be bossed around, but they do want to be led.

Funny/Interesting Happenings From My Trip…

If you follow me on Twitter or catch my occasional status updates on Facebook, you may have heard the live play-by-play of these incidents.  But in case you missed them, here were a few interesting/funny stories that happened on my trip to Phoenix over the weekend.

Cops On A Plane – We land in Phoenix, get parked at the gate, and the captain announces this: “stay in your seats while our officials come on board and solve a delicate matter.”

Awesome.  I love delicate matters in small confined places like an airplane!

Next thing we know, multiple cops come on board.  I travel enough to know that cops don’t normally greet the arriving passengers…unless of course it is a “delicate matter”.  A few cops stay towards the front and one goes to the back.  Some lady gets up and walks out and then the cop starts “escorting” some guy in 20s off.  As they are passing me, the guy asks the cop what this is all about, and the cop replies: “keep your mouth shut until we get out in the terminal.”

Apparently, this guy didn’t win the “best passenger of the flight” award.  Sounds like he was going to get a spanking.  Or a time-out for a few days in a small room with some dude named Vinny.

Obviously, the entire plane is intrigued by this “delicate matter”.  As I’m walking off the plane, I see the captain and a stewardess talking, so I switch into “eavesdropping-regarding-delicate-matters” mode.  As I walk by them, the stewardess finishes a sentence (I didn’t hear it), and the captain responds, “So at that moment it became a physical assault.”

Interesting.

Out in the terminal, there is some official talking to the lady (I knew he was official because he carried a walkie-talkie and his jacket said “official”).  Then there were four cops surrounding the guy talking to him.

Honestly, I wanted to stick around and watch this unfold.  Actually what I really wanted to do was take a picture, but I thought taking a picture of four cops with guns handling a “delicate matter” wasn’t such a smart idea.

I guess we’ll never know what happened with the “worst passenger of the flight”.  Say hi to Vinny for us.

Twitter Backfired On Me – I was sitting in one of the general sessions at the conference with a couple of friends.  There was another guy at the table we didn’t know who had his back to us but was fiddling with his iPhone most of the session.  No big deal, except for the fact that he didn’t mute his phone off of clicking mode, so anytime he typed anything, it was loud and annoying.

So I post the following on Twitter: “Sitting in the AM session at #nsa09. Guy at our table is typing on his iPhone but apparently doesn’t know how to mute the clicking…wow”.

The mistake I made was to include the “#nsa09″ also known as a hash-tag in Twitter world.  You use hash-tags to identify a category for your tweet.  People at the conference all use the same hash-tag so you can easily search and read what others are saying about the event.

Of course, I didn’t really think this guy would stumble across my tweet.  (You see where this is going don’t you?!)

Not five minutes go by before said iPhone guy turns around and says, “I turned off the clicking.”

OMG.

Well that was awkward.

At that moment I found myself in a pickle.  What is the proper protocol for technology-based situations like this?!  What do you say to a guy you’ve never met, who is sitting five feet from you, yet you offended via technology?  Do you apologize in the medium in which the offense took place (via Twitter) or do you take the incident from virtual to real since he is sitting right there?

What did I do?

I decided to tell you about it on my blog.

Headed To Phoenix…It’s Hot There

I leave tomorrow morning to head to Phoenix to hang out at the NSA National Convention for a few days.  While I’m looking forward to the event, I’m not looking forward to the weather.

Notice I took this at 7:39am CST, which would make it 6:39am in Phoenix.  And by 6:39am…

IT’S ALREADY 95 DEGREES!

Are you kidding me?

There’s only one day where the LOW isn’t in the 90s.

And save your comments…”But Grant, it’s a dry heat.”

115 degrees is 115 degrees genius.

I’ll be maxing out the air conditioning in my hotel room.

Why Memories Matter More Than Possessions…

On Monday night, I had the privilege of going to the Home Run Derby in St. Louis with my Dad.  We have both always been die-hard St. Louis Cardinal fans, so this was a unique experience we didn’t want to miss.

On the drive up there, naturally we were talking about our excitement and anticipation for the game.  In addition to our hype over this experience, we were reliving various vacations we had taken growing up and other moments we had shared.

And we got to discussing how important it is to accumulate experiences in life and to create valuable memories with those you love most.

That’s why my wife and I have placed a priority on taking trips not only with each other but with our girls.  It gives us the opportunity to gather experiences that we’ll never forget compared to buying another toy that will break.

Life is short.  Take the time to create valuable moments, memories, and experiences that will last.

What is one experience you’ve had in life that you’ll never forget?  Who did you share that moment with?

(This pic was taken by a friend from the other side of the stadium…apparently he had a serious zoom lens!  And yes, I brought my glove…don’t judge me.  We were in the right field bleachers…it was a safety issue.)

My Daughter Turns 1 Today!

Today, my beautiful little daughter Emilee turns one!  Being a parent is one of the greatest privileges in the world, and I wouldn’t trade my daughters for anything.

We have so much fun together, and I think the world of them both.

Oh, and their mom is smokin’ hot!

Why You Should Be On Twitter…

Twitter has become very fascinating to me lately.  It has just completely exploded in growth and with a very simple concept, they’ve managed to provide a lot of different usages for the service.

I’m assuming you’re already familiar with what Twitter is, so I won’t bother explaining it to the 6 people on the planet who don’t know what it is.

While most people are confused as to the value of Twitter, you should know that it is more than people sharing what they ate for lunch or that they’re sitting on the toilet (probably guilty of both).  Here are a few of the ways I utilize this service…

  • Learn About Trends On The Internet – I personally use TweetDeck on my laptop and my phone.  Their service includes a link to the site TwitScoop which basically tells you what the most popular topics or keywords are at that moment on Twitter.  This can be incredibly powerful to see current trends and buzz on the internet.  On several occasions, I’ve learned about breaking news before it was listed on major websites or news channels because so many people were talking about it on Twitter.
  • Connect With Like-Minded People – I use Twitter to keep connected with several people in my same profession.  I talk with other speakers, educators, and others who work with students.  To find people you’d be interested in following and connecting with, use the Twitter Search tool.
  • Links To Content – A lot of people use Twitter to share websites, articles, or videos online that they’ve found valuable.  If you found a piece of content interesting, more than likely, someone following you may find it helpful as well.
  • Peak Behind The Curtain Of Other Peoples’ Lives – Twitter gives you quick glances and snapshots into other peoples’ worlds.  You may have heard about the growing number of celebrities that use Twitter.  Depending on how they use it, I think this can be very smart for them, because Twitter has the ability to humanize people.  Celebrities or people you look up to and respect can share little glimpses into what’s going on in their lives.

Feel free to follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/grantbaldwin.

Do you use Twitter? What do you like about it?

Travels & Events This Week…

This morning I’m flying out to Montana to speak at their 4-H State Congress tonight and tomorrow.

I was going to be part of this event last year, but it was scheduled too close to when Emilee was due to be born.  That wouldn’t have gone over well to be in Montana while my wife goes into labor!

I’ve never been to Montana, so it should be fun.  I’ll fly home Thursday morning and then leave Friday afternoon to head up by Lake Of The Ozarks for a youth conference over the weekend.  I’ll come back Sunday morning and then we’ll have Emilee’s 1st birthday party that afternoon.

It’ll be a busy week for speaking and travel, but when you love what you do, it never seems like work!

Halftime: How To Get Back On Track For The Rest Of 2009

Filed under Thinking Out Loud..., Time Management/Organization

Give or take a few days, we’re about halfway through the year right now.  Pretty crazy how fast it flies by, huh?

So now is as good of a time as any to evaluate how things are going for you, where you’re at, and where you’re going.

If you’ve ever played sports, you know halftime is that opportunity to figure out what worked in the first half and improve on what didn’t work.  You have the same opportunity with your life in 2009.

Regardless of whether you’re doing well or have fallen off the wagon, here are some key questions to get you on track for the second half of 2009…

  • What’s Working? – Hopefully you’ve been doing something right so far in 2009!  Not only are you looking for areas to improve in, but you also need some “atta-boys” of where you’ve been successful.  What are the areas in your life that you’ve really been solid in?
  • What Do I Want To Accomplish By December 31? – Goals don’t just magically happen.  You have to be proactive in working towards accomplishing them.  If you know what you want your life to look like on December 31 of this year, you can work backwards to figure out how to accomplish it.
  • What Regrets Do I Have? – Great leaders (and smart people in general) learn from their mistakes.  Regrets can either be mistakes of things you did that you wish you hadn’t done, or things you didn’t do that you wish you had done.  Live with none of the above.
  • What Do I Do For Fun? – Life is too short just to go and go and go and then fall over and die.  What gives you life?  Besides breathing.  What hobbies or passions do you have that give you energy?
  • What Matters Most To Me? – How can you set any goals or make any adjustments in your life if you don’t know what matters most?  Write down your top 3 priorities and adjust how your time is spent according to these items.
