My Goals for 2009 – Part 1

Filed under Personal, Thinking Out Loud...

Goals
With the New Year upon us, I’m starting a series of blog posts this week about setting and achieving goals. Personally, I’m a big fan of setting and going after goals. Goals bring focus to what I’m trying to accomplish not only professionally, but in my personal life as well.
Here is a run down of what we’ll be covering in this series:
Part 1 – The Importance of Goals
Part 2 – The “How-To” of Goal Setting
Part 3 – My Business Goals for 2009
Part 4 – My Personal Goals for 2009

So let’s start off with the importance of goals…

1. Goals provide a roadmap – Whether we like to admit it or not, often times we have the mentality that we will get wherever we want to go just by default. As if by accident, we will accomplish something with our lives. In case you haven’t figured out already, it doesn’t work like that. People get places in life and accomplish goals because they meant to.

2. Goals provide focus - You’ve probably heard the expression that if you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time! Setting goals will help you to create a target to aim at and shoot towards.

3. Goals eliminate distractions - When you’ve got your eye on that target, you can block out all the noise around you. I used to play basketball and we would practice free throws while everyone else was yelling, screaming, and talking trash about your momma. It forced us to block out the distractions and focus on making the shot.

4. Goals add value to life – We all love that feeling when we know we’ve worked hard and accomplished something with our lives. I’ve mentioned before that my wife and I have been working the last 2 years on paying off our debts and just a few weeks ago, we paid off our final loan (other than our house). So not only was being debt-free an incredible feeling, but knowing that we busted our butts for 2 years to make it happen brought an incredible sense of accomplishment to our lives.

Setting and working towards goals comes easier to some than others. Regardless whether you’re the most disciplined, organized person in the world or if you’re a scattered mess, you must create goals for yourself.

But how exactly do you set goals? Come back tomorrow and we’ll show you how…
