Early this morning we had a nice little storm that blew through our area and knocked out the power for a few hours. Of course, it’s not that big of a deal when you’re sleeping so I slept in an extra hour or so but then you have to get up and get moving with the day.
But with the power out, I found my morning routine to be very restricted. I can’t check email. I can’t check the Yahoo headlines. I can’t watch Sportscenter. Anything at all electronic , I can’t do. On top of that, other than one or two battery powered clocks, you don’t really ever have a good sense of what time it is in the rest of the world. And can I just be honest for a second?
It’s kind of nice having no power.
Maybe once or twice a month, the world should have a mandatory “no power” day. You hear all the talk about conserving energy and perhaps a “no power” day would help with the problem. Plus, just the fact that we live in a society that is so connected digitally, that it is like we go through a certain withdrawal when we become disconnected.
So maybe you should consider enforcing your own personal “no power” day every so often. Turn off the TV. Shut down the computer. Turn off your cell phone. And even unplug all your clocks. Just completely disconnect yourself. I think you’ll find…
It’s kind of nice having no power.
