A LITTLE HISTORY

Growing up, Grant always enjoyed challenging and inspiring those around him to overcome obstacles and be something significant in life. Having experienced multiple divorces within his family, Grant knew what it was to turn hardship into hope. As a teenager, he began to see how he could use his challenges to encourage and empower those around him.

NORMAL GUY

When he's not traveling and speaking to students, Grant lives in Springfield, Missouri where he is a pretty normal guy. He likes running, golf, reading, cookie dough ice cream, and long walks on the beach with his wife...except they don't have beaches in Missouri.

How did you get started speaking?

I first got my taste of public speaking in high school. I also spoke in small group settings in my church and loved it. After college, I was a youth pastor and had multiple opportunities to speak to students on a weekly basis.

Later, I worked with a school assembly organization doing presentations around the country and eventually started my own business as a speaker.

That’s a pretty condensed version, but you can get the longer version of how I got started here and here.

I want to become a speaker...any advice?

Becoming a good speaker takes time and practice. Every good speaker was once a horrible speaker. But after years of practice and trial and error, you get better. So if you’re just starting, speak at anything you can. Start with local clubs, school classrooms, your church, or maybe all your grandma’s cats.

When you get to a point where people start inviting you to come speak at their event or school, you know you’re getting there. Then run it like a business. You’ve got to do a lot of marketing to let people know who you are and what you do. It takes a while, so unfortunately most people give up. But if you stick with it, you too could have your own FAQ page (pretty glamorous huh ;)

Here are some additional tips I wrote about here. If you have more questions about becoming a speaker, email me anytime at grant@grantbaldwin.com.

What’s your favorite place to visit?

My standard answer is wherever I currently am is my favorite place ;)

I love Chicago...definitely one of my favorite big cities. I also like New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, San Diego, and DC. Our family loves beaches so we love Florida and Hawaii.

What do you like to do for fun?

I like to spend time with my girls, go on dates with my wife, or enjoy a nice run. I like to read and dabble with gardening (don’t judge me) and occasionally play some golf.

What’s the best part about being a speaker?

I love meeting new people and seeing new places. I love traveling around and seeing different parts of the country. I also love the amount of time I get to be home with my girls and the flexibility I have with my schedule.

Who have been some of your biggest influences in life?

You. Yes, you. (Both of you if more than one person is reading this)

My parents have been a huge influence on me, and I still have a great relationship with both of them. My siblings are pretty cool. My youth pastor helped inspire me to do what I do now with students. My wife and daughters mean the world to me. I adore them. (Ahhhhhhh…isn’t that sweet)

Favorite food?

Steak, sandwiches, broccoli, shrimp, salad, and most importantly ice cream (with sprinkles). Cookies are tasty. Skittles are good too. Chocolate syrup is delightful. I like sugar.

Favorite TV show?

SportsCenter, The Office, Modern Family, Amazing Race

Favorite movie?

Tommy Boy, Ocean’s 11, Remember the Titans, Field of Dreams, Rocky IV, Back to the Future

Favorite book?

The Total Money Makeover, 4-Hour Work Week, Made to Stick, The E-Myth, Getting Things Done, Rework, The Bible, Reality Check (sorry, I couldn’t resist)

Favorite music?

I like a lot of different stuff. Pandora is the greatest thing ever for music. I like Bon Jovi, John Mayer, Coldplay, Jason Mraz, and U2. When I run, I usually listen to more rap/rock like Linkin Park, Jay-Z, Eminem, or Black Eyed Peas.
