If you’re tired of thinking small in your business ventures, or in life, then you’ll want to listen to today’s guest, Michael Port.
Michael is the bestselling author of Book Yourself Solid, a top-ranked speaker, and an entrepreneur who helps people think bigger about who they are and what they offer the world. Join us as we talk about all of this and more on today’s edition of How’d You Get Into That?.
MORE ABOUT THIS SHOW
Michael studied psychology in college, but wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted to do. He had to have at least one fine arts class to complete his degree, so he decided to take an acting class. To his surprise, he really enjoyed it. Acting seemed to fit his personality and talents perfectly.
His last year in college he played a key role in a production of The Grapes of Wrath. After his performance, his dad told him to pursue acting because he was really good at it and he’d learn more about people in acting than he would studying psychology.
Michael’s litmus test for knowing what direction to pursue is how interested he is in the details of something. With acting, he found himself reading a ton of different roles, parts and plays – just really getting into it all. The same thing can be true for you, especially if you’re not a detail person. If you find yourself gravitating towards the details of something that’s a clue to pursue that subject.
THE FINER DETAILS OF THIS SHOW:
- The secret to dealing with rejection.
- How can you chose your target market?
- How to get clarity on what you help people do.
- Do you want to be known for something? Michael explains how.
- Why it’s so important for you to discover your voice.
- And so much more!
Choosing acting, he went to graduate school at NYU, and then landed parts on shows like Sex and the City, Third Watch, Law and Order, and others. He believes the key to mastery is being willing to put the work and the time in. Actors, athletes and others seem to make it look easy, but people don’t see all the hours and failures and frustrations they’ve put in to get where they are.
After a few years as an actor, Michael found his interests moving in a different direction. Having made some contacts in the fitness world along the way, he moved on to a successful career on the business side of that industry.
But his interests moved again, and he began consulting for service professionals in the fitness industry. Since then, he has branched out to other service industries, and has built a thriving brand with Book Yourself Solid. His brand helps entrepreneurs of all kinds get more clients.
Michael credits most of his successes to his acting training and his ability to perform. Many people think acting means being dishonest or inauthentic. Nothing could be further from the truth, he says. To be an actor, and an entrepreneur, takes vulnerability and openness. Without vulnerability, you will never discover your voice, and you’ll never attract the people who need what you have to offer.
Please join me in thanking Michael for sharing his invaluable knowledge and for helping us book ourselves solid today. And thanks to you for being here, we’ll see you next time!
