Join us as we discuss all of this and more on the 45th edition of How’d You Get Into That?.

MORE ABOUT THIS SHOW

Jeremy wasn’t always a CrossFit guru. He grew up singing in a musical family, and figured he would always have a career in music. After high school, he landed a voice scholarship to Missouri State University. But when he got to college, he quickly realized it wasn’t all about getting up in front of people and performing.

After his first year of college, someone who had heard him sing the national anthem connected him with a tour manager for Natalie Grant. The tour manager knew a rep at Atlantic Records who wanted to put a boy band together. Before he knew it, he was on a plane to San Francisco to sing for the VP of Atlantic Records. They wanted him!

Leaving school behind, Jeremy recorded and toured for 3-4 years with the band. Their first album went gold. He was really grateful for the opportunity to tour the country, meet new people, and experience life on a broader scale. This prepared him to relate to different people from all walks of life, which served him well later on.

THE FINER DETAILS OF THIS SHOW:

  • Why passion and skill are key to your success.
  • Why doing manual labor is important to everyones career.
  • Why the obvious path may not be the best option for you.
  • Why you need to trust that there is a divine plan for your life.
  • How going with your gut and acting on it removes anxiety.
  • And so much more!

But something wasn’t right. He was a family man and had a girlfriend, and realized he needed to make a decision: continue with music, or settle down. He decided to quit music, settle down, and go back to school. He and his now wife eventually moved back to Springfield, MO where he re-enrolled at Missouri State University for a Sports Medicine degree. He had decided to become an athletic trainer. He had always been into athletics, and would frequently hit the gym during free time while out on tour with the band.

Jeremy really enjoyed the body mechanics, and anatomy and physiology aspects of his coursework. Then a friend told him about a new fitness approach called CrossFit. He tried it and realized he really liked it. Jeremy saw how he could bridge the gap between injury prevention as a trainer and athletic performance as a CrossFit enthusiast. His background as an athletic trainer gave him a lot of street cred within the CrossFit community.

After completing his degree, Jeremy turned down an offer to be a Director of Sports Medicine at a local hospital. Why would he walk away from such a prestigious and lucrative offer? Because he knew in his heart of hearts that he wanted to own his own CrossFit Gym. Though it was scary to leave an offer like that on the table and go into the unknown of business ownership, that’s exactly what Jeremy did. He honored his own dream and his own vision for his future and opened his first gym.

Overall, it’s worked out quite well for him. After taking that leap into CrossFit box ownership, he also started competing professionally and he launched the Heart of America team competition event. That event began as a humble, local competition that has blossomed into a national movement with over 1,000 athletes participating from all over the country!

Today, he is co-owner of two CrossFit boxes (gyms) in Springfield, MO, a CrossFit competitor, and founder and coordinator of The Heart of America Team Competition, a national CrossFit event. Jeremy believes being open to possibilities – things that aren’t even on your radar at the time – is really important if you want to find success. Please join me in thanking Jeremy for sharing his time, wisdom and insights on today’s episode. Thanks for being here and we’ll see you next time!
