If you have ever yearned for something more or wanted to travel the world extensively but wondered how you’ll love today’s guests and what they have to share, Warren and Betsy Talbot.
Warren and Betsy spent two years sculpting their conventional reality into one of world travel, a life they are still enjoying today. Join us as they share how they did it and more on this edition of How’d You Get Into That?
MORE ABOUT THIS SHOW
Warren and Betsy started out like a lot of couples. Betsy did marketing for women-owned businesses and Warren worked for a large tech firm. They had great family and friends, good jobs, a nice house, and time to spend with each other. In other words, it was a good life. But something was missing.
Over time, they realized their jobs were taking priority over their relationship. And doing so drove them to the brink of divorce. They knew they had to make some dramatic changes if they were going to save their relationship, so they moved cross country, got new jobs, and started over. But they felt like something was missing.
In 2008, everything changed. Betsy’s brother had a heart attack at the age of 35. Also, a dear friend of theirs had a brain aneurism. These health scares caused them to reevaluate their lives completely. They asked themselves, what they would do right now if they knew they wouldn’t make it to our 40th birthdays. Asking that question started a new adventure for them, together.
THE FINER DETAILS OF THIS SHOW:
- The specific technique Warren & Betsy used to save money for their big leap.
- How to curtail your unnecessary spending.
- How can you deal with people who don’t support your life changes?
- Why taking action on your dream can make your dream even better!
- How working on their dream improved their marriage
- And so much more!
Warren and Betsy had always loved travel. So they created a plan to sell everything and save enough money to travel the world. Their original plan was to just take a year off; but as they started researching and gathering ideas, it seemed like there were endless opportunities to just keep traveling! They were excited to see where this plan took them, and they stayed open to possibilities.
To actually make this plan work Warren and Betsy said the trick was to take little steps toward their dream, every day. They put together a plan, and they followed it. They chose a launch date two years out. They also created a website and a blog to document their travels. They planned their itinerary, and worked out a rough budget.
By the time they hit their launch date, they had saved enough to travel for five years. The budgeting process was key, they said, because it made the whole thing a reality for them. They figured out they would need approximately $100 per day. So everyday for two years they scrimped, saved and sold items they didn’t need until they had reached their financial goal.
And then the launch date came and they set sail! Their journey began in Ecuador and today they are still travelling the world together. They now own a place in southern Spain where they spend four months each year, and the rest of the time they spend travelling. Their primary income streams are book publishing, blogging and podcasting.
Warren and Betsy say that if they can realize their dreams of traveling the world, then anybody can do anything they want to do – whether it’s starting a business, taking up a hobby, getting healthy, or anything else! You can do it, all you have to do is give yourself permission. Please join me in thanking Warren and Betsy for sharing their relationship, finance, and travel wisdom with us today. Thanks for being here and we’ll see you next time!

Great episode! I’d love to see the examples of couples with 5 kids traveling the world. I have 5 kids of my own, and would love the motivation. Thanks!!
Hi, Benjamin. We meet lots of traveling families, but I think that most of them are so busy homeschooling, organizing, and traveling that they don’t have time to podcast/blog. Family on Bikes traveled with 2 kids on bikes from Alaska to the tip of South America, and they have a great website. Check it out, and good luck with your travel plans!
