Jeff’s passion is making finance and investing understandable and easy for people. But he didn’t start out that way! He got Cs and Ds in math in high school and struggled with it. Then in college it just clicked, and he found he really enjoyed finance and anything related to numbers.
His parents had little money, so in order to pay for college he enlisted in the Army National Guard. In college, he wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to major in, even though he was gravitating towards math. After talking to his dad about it, he said “have you ever met an accountant with a personality? You need to major in accounting!” So that’s what he did, and he found that he really liked the problem solving aspect of finance.
During his time in school, he got an internship at investment firm A.G. Edwards. The firm actually offered him a job as a financial advisor at the end of his internship, but he declined it because he felt he was too young and inexperienced. He thought he needed to be an expert in all the different kinds of investments to be able to advise people properly.

He thought he would be able to find a job elsewhere, but when that didn’t pan out, he went back to A.G. Edwards. Luckily, the job offer was still on the table. A key moment for him was sitting across from prospective clients, a couple in their 60s, who thought it was finally time to meet with a financial planner. The reality was, they hadn’t saved enough. It was a big wake up call for Jeff, he knew he did not want to end up like this couple.
Then he was called to active duty with the National Guard in January 2005. His unit was deployed to Iraq for 17 months. Thankfully, he returned home and was able to resume his previous role with A.G. Edwards. The firm had kept his book of business going while he was in Iraq.
Life soon threw him another curveball; A.G. Edwards bought out by Wachovia. Soon after, he left with 3 other advisors to start their own firm. They took their time and looked at all the angles, but in the end it made sense, so they took the leap. Jeff was extra nervous because his mentor cautioned him against starting their own firm, but he did it anyway.
And they killed it! An advisor told them within 3 months they would see that this was a good decision. Jeff says within 5 or 6 weeks he realized it was going to work.
With a successful business underway, Jeff wanted to find another way to give back. He started offering investment classes at the local park district. That turned into a blog on personal finance, which won blog of the year award at the Financial Blogging Conference!
Jeff eventually decided to start his own firm, today he continues to advise on personal finance. He has also authored an Amazon best-selling book called Soldier of Finance.
